Cuts risk of Cardiovascular Events

A randomized trial has shown that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra‑virgin olive oil (EVOO) significantly reduced major cardiovascular events—including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death—compared with a low‑fat control diet. In other words, a diet rich in high‑quality olive oil is strongly linked to better heart health.

Key Results
  • Participants with the highest intake of total olive oil had a 35% reduction in cardiovascular disease risk (HR 0.65; 95% CI 0.47–0.89).
Those consuming the most extra‑virgin olive oil showed a 39% risk reduction (HR 0.61; 95% CI 0.44–0.85).
Higher total olive oil consumption was associated with a 48% lower cardiovascular mortality risk (HR 0.52; 95% CI 0.29–0.93).
For each additional 10 g/day of EVOO, cardiovascular disease risk decreased by 10%, and cardiovascular mortality decreased by 7%.
Benefits were particularly strong in participants following a Mediterranean diet, while no significant associations were found for cancer or all‑cause mortality.
Conclusion
Regular consumption of olive oil—especially extra‑virgin olive oil—within a Mediterranean dietary pattern is associated with meaningful reductions in cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality among people at high risk.
